Digestion, Menopause, hot flushes & DARE

Digestion, Menopause, hot flushes & DARE

By Joy Wisdom

Digestion is an important and essential process where food is broken down and essential nutrients are released and absorbed. A lot can challenge the optimal function of our gut and there are many factors to consider that influence this complex system. In Menopause as women we need to make adjustments that a pill won’t do.

Everything about us in menopause changes as hormonal impacts and surges take greater hold and causes internal stress and anxiety as body adjusts to the new situation. Requiring new thinking and looking for new living options. The ‘savvy’ woman will look for alternatives to smooth her way through the long journey of menopause.

One of the most distressing things about Perimenopause is the start of hot flushes. However for many women hot flushes don’t stop after periods stop they continue into menopause and more often than not it is down to digestive issues and lifestyle choices.

The structure of the stomach largely resembles the rest of the gastrointestinal (GI)  tract, but with specialised cells and glands secrete various stomach-specific substances. If it does not function optimally, the rest of the digestive system can become significantly compromised, with so many delicate balances and different parts that make up the whole of gastrointestinal function, becoming weak and malfunctioning.  Why does it breakdown in so many people?

The body is a unit and cause, and effect is passed all over the-whole-body. Researchers are finding evidence that irritation in the gastrointestinal system may send signals to the central nervous system (CNS) that trigger mood changes. Affecting mind and emotion.

In Menopause the digestive system is more involved than we appreciate.

Logically, our diet and how we eat will have an effect upon systems and cause internal stress and anxiety within body. Symptoms are often misinterpreted and treated for depression and stress; There is no doubt, the gastrointestinal system is affected by internal imbalanced states. Billions of neurons held in the small intestine are affected directly, by anxiety and stress from internal dysfunctions or imbalanced. Indirectly via anxiety caused by emotional impacts from life interactions. A challenge at times to differentiate which is the cause and effect.

I find in many a webinar or workshop, irregular eating habits, going a long time between meals or lack of eating, puts the internal state into deep anxiety, unable to function and support the individual.

Why we need ‘Whole body investigation’ Disorders cause, and effect are not what they seem!

Neurons in our small intestine interpret our world. If ever “gone with your gut” for decisions or felt “butterflies in stomach” when nervous, you’re likely getting signals from your second brain. Known as Gut/Brian axis physically and ‘Intuition’ emotionally.

Neurons are hidden in the walls of the digestive system, this “brain in gut” is revolutionizing medicine’s understanding of the links between digestion, mood, health and even the way you think.

Science calls this, the enteric nervous system (ENS). The ENS has two thin layers of more than 100 million nerve cells lining our gastrointestinal tract from Oesophagus to Rectum. Due to the ‘Gut Brain Axis’ our digestive system is easily affected by emotional issues with stress hormone release.

Emotions affect digestive function and does affect how our internal systems respond. Solar and Sacral Plexus effects the numerous neurons held within the small intestine. Go on to effect intestine performance.

Hot flushes come from low blood sugar or irregular eating. From a menopause point of view in JWT menopause webinars many women have the same issue, they don’t eat regularly enough for the digestive system to function well. The body goes into stress and anxiety when this happens.

The body struggles with changes from menopause and hormonal decline. The adjustment surges and hormonal reduction affects all of us not just parts. Highlights weakness and anything out of sync will be highlighted. Gut malfunction will be part of the picture.

Blood sugar drops. Essentially, women eat on the run, and have a long history of long periods between eating, going too far, too long and blood sugar drops. Similar outcomes from when first pregnant. Due to hormone decline the digestive system can’t cope as well going long periods without food. Starvation base lines form, causing more anxiety. Headaches, feeling light headed and overwhelmed, hot flushes arrive.

During menopause eating habits need to change, reduce spicy foods, shorter breaks in eating, little and often to keep blood sugar up. Keeping Hot flushes away. Constipation will give similar outcomes of heat/hot flushes. The digestive system is important in all of us no matter what age.

Men can have the same issues when going long periods without food causing internal anxiety and stress. When it is lifestyle and digestive malfunction is the true cause. Causing stress and unpleasant outcomes.

Consider rebalancing your digestive system to help reduce internal anxiety.
